What Are Art Snacks?
And Why They Matter When You’re Overwhelmed
I used to believe that in order to be creative, I needed uninterrupted time.
A clean workspace.
All the “right” supplies.
A quiet house (which never existed).
And the energy to be inspired.
The truth? That setup rarely happens.
Especially for women like us; holding down jobs, caring for families, running households, supporting aging parents, and trying to remember who we are in the midst of it all.
That’s why, years ago, I started making what I call “art snacks.”
So… what are art snacks?
They're tiny creative moments.
Little doses of beauty, play, and self-expression that take 5–15 minutes.
They don't ask for perfection. They don’t need a plan.
They’re permission to begin, even when you feel tired or unsure.
You don’t have to finish a whole painting.
You don’t even need a fancy journal.
You just need to show up, with supplies you love, a paint smudge, a page to scribble on and say: “I matter enough to make something today.”
Why art snacks work (especially when you're overwhelmed):
-
They lower the bar. You’re not committing to hours - just minutes.
-
They rebuild trust with your creative self.
-
They help you feel something again: joy, peace, energy, even just curiosity.
-
They make space in a life that feels too full of everything else.
What counts as an art snack?
-
Ripping and gluing paper scraps into a mini collage
-
Swiping watercolor across a scrap piece of paper
-
Doodling a word or phrase you need to hear
-
Painting on junk mail
-
Drawing spirals while listening to music
-
Taping a quote into your journal and coloring around it
All of these are valid. All of them are enough.
